On Wednesday, April 22, the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, Southern Sector Rising is sponsoring an all-day Earth Day Action with online and offline components.
We’re spotlighting “pre-existing conditions” in Southern Dallas like Shingle Mountain and environmental racism that degrade public health in our neighborhoods and make us the most vulnerable populations in the current pandemic.
Shingle Mountain is Dallas’ largest and most grotesque symbol of environmental racism. A six story, 100,000-ton pile of illegal hazardous waste poses an on-going public health threat to Southern Dallas residents. Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson has never visited Shingle Mountain, never spoken a word about it in public and never addressed the policy failures that allowed it to happen. He’s refused to order air monitoring. He’s refused to declare a public health emergency or use eminent domain powers to remove the waste. He’s refused to waive the city’s landfill fees for
removing the waste. He’s shown no leadership.
We’re hoping he’s ignored Shingle Mountain and the problems it represents because he can’t find the thing. So we’re going to help him.
